Updating connection failed nm ifupdown connection c
ifupdate "updated" (it failed), and it killed Cinnamon plus a bunch of other stuff in the process.I was going to fix it in the terminal, but it completely wiped out my network connectivity too.Another lesson confirmed from previous experience is that I bought this new Think Pad T450s because I could have two internal drives (2.5" and M.2 SSDs), and the other one has a working copy of Windows 10 which thankfully I can now continue to use for work. I update stretch every morning, and yesterday (2015/01/11) "aptitude" asked me to suppress ifupdown and resolvconf, incompatible with systemd 228.3 and later. Since then I lost any automatic config of the network. I will also file a bug report for ifupdown2 since it can't run the commands "dhclient" or "ip" since they are not installed, which means it has some unlisted dependencies.
By right clicking I was able to get Synaptic to say it would install the update, along with quite a few other updates.
In the process of doing this, my screen went dark and stayed dark.
:\ This definitely changed my plans for the day, that's for sure.
Thanks for all of the replies, it is reassuring that the problem is taken seriously.
I will try some of the diagnostic suggestions, but I am pretty certain that--with my relatively low level of skill--I will end up reinstalling my system from scratch. Nope, it's a workaround but at least it got me my connection back.
